How to Prep Your Nails Before Gel Patches — The Complete Guide
Applying your gel patches takes 10 minutes. But the preparation beforehand is just as important as the application itself. A poorly prepared nail = a patch that peels off in 3 days. A well-prepared nail = 3 weeks of wear. Here's everything you need to do.
Why preparation is essential
Gel patches adhere directly to the nail surface. If the nail is oily, damp, or covered with residue, the patch cannot form a strong bond. This is the number one reason for premature peeling — not the quality of the patch, but the preparation.
Step 1 — Remove cuticles with The Care Gel Cuticle Remover
The first step, often overlooked. Cuticles and small dead skin overhanging the nail prevent the patch from sticking properly to the edges.
Our cuticle pusher pen is designed precisely for this. Its buffing tip gently works on cuticles thanks to an integrated mineral oil that softens and removes small pieces of skin without pain or aggressive tools. A few seconds per nail is enough.
Result: a clean and clear nail surface, ready for application.
Step 2 — Clean and degrease the nail
This is the most critical step. Natural nails produce sebum — a thin, natural oily layer that prevents any adhesion.
Soak a cotton pad with 70° alcohol or acetone-free nail polish remover. Wipe each nail, focusing on the edges. The nail should be perfectly dry and matte — if you see any shiny reflections, there's still oil left.
Do not touch your nails after this step — finger skin immediately transfers sebum back.
Step 3 — Lightly file if necessary
If your nails have a very smooth or naturally shiny surface, a slight abrasion with the file provided in your kit improves adhesion. A few strokes are enough — no need to sand, just lightly mattify.
Step 4 — Make sure your nails are perfectly dry
Moisture is the enemy of the gel patch. Never apply your patches right after showering, bathing, or washing dishes. Wait at least 30 minutes for your nails to be completely dry.
The 4-step summary
→ Cuticle pen — gently remove small pieces of skin and cuticles → Degreasing — alcohol or acetone-free nail polish remover on each nail → Gentle filing — lightly mattify if surface is too smooth → Drying — nails perfectly dry before application
10 minutes of preparation for 3 weeks of wear. It's worth it.
